from the Hand, Not a Machine

Words are not my only medium. I love carving wood and working with clay. All my carvings are handmade with some combination of chisels, a Dremel, a hand-held router, and an angle grinder. My clay projects are hand-built, no molds. Sometimes I use a wheel, but really I shouldn't. I still suck at that.

This is beautiful a piece of walnut. I used a handheld router, chisel, and Dremel. I made the image and numbers pop with waterproof paint, and finished it with tung oil and a coat of poly for durability against the weather.	I designed and built this for a customer who wanted a double-decker aquarium stand to house her two snakes. The frame is built from 100% pine 2x4s and 2x3s, and I used tongue & groove pine panels for the cabinet sides and doors. I enhanced the rustic/vintage look with brass plaques on the frame face and brass-accented knobs on the doors. Click the link for more photos of this piece.	I made this from sycamore branches, ash wood (steps), and the cubby and platform are 3/4" plywood. I covered the cubby and platform in waterproof canvas and finished off the look with some rope and sisal.
This was a rough-cut piece of walnut. I used a handheld router, chisel, and Dremel. I made the egret, grass, and numbers pop with waterproof paint, and finished it with tung oil and a coat of poly for durability against the weather.	I used a router to extract the center leaving the cross behind. I then finished the piece with tung oil that really made the colors in the wood pop.	I used an angle grinder to shape the sand and a Dremel for the rest. I added black half marbles for eyes to offer a little realism. I gave the stingray a light coat of blue wood stain and finished it all with a two coats of linseed oil.
I cut out the cross shape with a Dremel and then texturized the background and the silhouette with a Dremel sphere bit. I also burned the edges of the silhouette and wrote bible verse with the wood burner.	I used a thick pine round for the base, hot-glued rope round a piece of driftwood, and finished it off with a carving of an owl for a truly unique cat scratcher.	I threw the bowl and built the Octopus by hand to add to the side. I hand painted the octopus.
I hand-built the vase and the rose from clay.	I used a Dremel to carve this octopus into a wood box. I used the spere bit to add detailed texture to the body.	I used the same technique as the other cross with a router to extract the middle and then cleaned it up with a Dremel and hand sanding.
